Stata è un software statistico completo le cui potenzialità sono in grado di soddisfare un’ampia gamma di utenti accademici e professionali, in discipline quali economia, sociologia, psicologia, biostatistica, epidemiologia e altre. Stata include una vasta gamma di funzioni statistiche (vedi la sezione principali caratteristiche) e piene capacità di data management. E’ facile da usare per utenti alle prime armi, ma allo stesso tempo offre opzioni di programmazione sofisticate per gli utenti più esperti. Nuove potenzialità sviluppate e aggiornamenti ufficiali possono essere installati semplicemente tramite internet.

Stata è disponibile in quattro edizioni diverse: Small Stata, Stata/IC (Intercooled Stata), Stata/SE (Stata Special Edition)  e Stata/MP. Small Stata è il prodotto ideale per gli studenti. Rispetto a Intercooled Stata, Stata/SE permette di lavorare con banche dati molto più ampie. Stata/MP è la versione più veloce, in grado di sfruttare le potenzialità di PC multiprocessore, inclusi l’Intel CoreTM Duo e l’AMD X2 dual-core.
